The Cluster team is interested in the elementary processes of nucleation or evaporation of aggregates at the molecular scale. An original experimental device makes it possible to measure the cross sections of unimolecular attachment by low energy collision or of fragmentation by high energy collision. The experiment also provides access to the heat capacity of aggregates as a function of their temperature, which allows phase transitions to be detected and their evolution with particle size to be studied. The systems studied range from homogeneous molecular aggregates (water, alcohols, PAH, etc.) to mixed aggregates (water-uracil, etc.)
